Ravenhill’s BIP (batterer intervention program) is part of a community/system-wide response to the issue of intimate partner violence. Research has shown that batterer intervention programs, as an adjunct to a coordinated community response to domestic abuse, can bring about a significant reduction in this type of violence. The 26 week curriculum adheres to the standards set by the Bucks County Batterer Intervention Programs Organizing Committee (BIPOC) and attempts to stop all tactics of abuse and change batterers’ attitudes towards women and battering. Throughout treatment perpetrators are held accountable for their violent behavior, while at the same time strategies are developed to both monitor and contain their behavior to ensure victim and/or current partner’s safety.
Upon referral, a self paid intake interview is conducted to assess the candidate’s suitability for group inclusion. Areas to be considered are acceptance of responsibility for crime of arrest and amenability for treatment. As standard BIP practice, and to assess the lethality of a client entering BIP, a lethality assessment will be conducted at intake and then monitored throughout the clients involvement in the program.
Group intervention is the primary treatment modality. To promote quality service and maximum interaction, optimum group size is 3-15 participants. BIP groups are conducted by a Master’s level therapist and co-facilitated by an additional professional. For the purpose of modeling healthy egalitarian relationships mixed gender facilitators are used. The group leader will serve to lead the group, monitor compliance, collect session fees, and act as a liaison to the probation/parole officer. Upon completion of the program, a discharge summary detailing treatment impact will be provided.
